Wrapping up their weekend a day after a thrilling five-set win, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back at it.
The Lakers were looking for a perfect weekend to begin 2025 as they once again hosted the Guelph Gryphons at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
Another battle to the end saw the Lakers come away with their second straight 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 17-25, 15-11) victory.
In the opening set, the teams were very even, tied 8-8 early on.
After trading points, Nipissing grabbed a late 20-17 lead as both teams look for an early advantage in the match.
Nipissing extended their lead to 23-20, but Guelph stormed back with five straight points to take the opening set, 25-23.
In the second, Guelph carried their momentum from the first set to grab an early 8-4 lead and added to it, going up 13-8.
After trailing by five, the Lakers turned things around and went on a 13-4 run, going ahead 21-17 late in the game.
Nipissing closed things out in style, claiming the set 25-17.
The Lakers jump out to an early 11-6 lead in the third set and kept rolling after the strong finish to the second.
Nipissing remains out in front, leading 18-14 as the teams had to the final stages of the third set.
A 7-3 run for the Lakers closed things out, as they took the third set 25-17 to take the lead in the match.
The Gryphons replied in the fourth set, sending the match to a fifth and deciding set.
Guelph led 7-1 early and despite a push late by the Lakers, the Gryphons were in control for most of the set.
An advantage of 12-7 turned into a 20-14 lead before they put the game away, winning 25-17.
In the fifth, Nipissing reversed their fortunes, going up 6-2 early and never looked back, grabbing the win.
They went ahead 8-3 before putting things away, winning 15-11.
Oceane Raymond-Leduc led the way again for the Lakers with 21 kills and Paige Owen had 13 in the victory.
The Lakers hit the road next weekend, travelling to Toronto to face the York Lions.
