It was a gorgeous day for golf on Tuesday May 27th, 2025, as York University Athletics & Recreation hosted the 22nd annual Lions Cup golf tournament, presented by TD Insurance, in support of York Lions varsity athletics.

Back at King’s Riding Golf Course in King City, Ont., for a second consecutive year, 92 golfers aimed for the fairways all with the common goal to provide financial assistance to York student-athletes. Additionally, a number of York’s student-athletes, those reaping the benefit of the funds raised, actively interacted with the golfers. This year’s event brought in $164,000 in pre-event registration funds plus a post-event donation of $2,000, bringing the total money raised to $166,000, another new Lions Cup record.

As has been the case in previous versions of the event, this year’s Lions Cup featured several competitions along the course, including driving, chipping and putting accuracy challenges, the longest drive competition, closest to the pin, and a “beat the pro” contest. Student-athletes took this opportunity to foster valuable relationships with professionals in their fields of study as they prepare for careers of their own.

York’s Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation Steven Chuang takes great pride in the event, and is thankful for those who have spent time in money in support of York athletes.

“I am very proud of what this event represents, and I’m extremely grateful for all our generous sponsors,” Chuang) said. “Our Lions will greatly benefit from the funds raised today, which will dramatically enhance their student-athlete experience and better prepare them for competition.  One hundred percent of these funds raised are directly supporting student-athletes on a year-round basis, ensuring that the return on investment in the Lions Cup Fund provides a high impact.”

Originally dubbed the Chair’s Cup in 2001, the Lions Cup boasts a rich history. Its creators, Marshall Cohen, the former Chair of the York University Board of Governors, his wife Judi, and current chair of the York University Pension Fund Investment Committee and longtime York Athletics supporter Guy Burry, had a visionary goal: to establish an event that not only raised much-needed funds, but also forged bonds and backing among friends, alumni, and other stakeholders. In recent years, under Burry’s leadership, the event has centred on bolstering varsity student-athlete experience by committing all funds raised to bursaries and nutrition.

These monies are possible thanks only to the generous contributions of returning and first-time sponsors, and donors of this year’s tournament. Their support is crucial in cultivating a culture of excellence in athletics and recreation, providing Lions athletes the chance to achieve their goals, both in the classroom and on the playing surface.

“Student-athletes are among the most well-adjusted and career ready individuals that a university can produce”, reflected Burry. “I am proud to help lead an event that directly focuses on supporting their journeys on their way to being our nation’s leaders of the future. We are so thankful for all those that support that journey, specifically our wonderful tournament sponsors and donors.”
