NO. 5 SPARTANS FALL TO MANITOBA

WINNIPEG – In their return to Canada West action after the Christmas break, No. 5-ranked Trinity Western lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-20) against the University of Manitoba Friday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Making his first Canada West appearance since Oct. 25, due to injury, Cory Schoenherr led the Spartans with seven kills and three blocks, but TWU was second best throughout much of the match, with the Bisons winning both the battle from the baseline and the blocking battle.

In the three-set match, the Bisons had a 10-4 edge in aces and a 14-6 advantage in blocks.

The loss drops TWU to 7-4 in Canada West while the wins see Manitoba improve to 5-6.

Manitoba was led by Karil Dadash Adeh, who had nine kills and four aces, while Owen Weekes had eight kills and Jordon Heppner had eight blocks and three aces.

The Bisons also had a hitting percentage of .309 compared to TWU’s .091.

QUOTABLE
Adam Schriemer, TWU Head Coach
“A lot of people think Canada West is an ‘ace or miss’ high-ball league and I think we saw that today on the wrong side of the competition. I think we were breaking in serve receive too many times against a really talented serving group. We allowed their greatest strength to be a reason for their success tonight. Getting blocked 14 times in three sets is also difficult and that will never be a recipe for a win. The nice thing is that we have a lot of things in our control that we can be better at. I just hope we’re better enough for a long enough period tomorrow.”
