SASKATOON, Sask. – Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 14) Canada West announced the latest conference BioSteel Players of the Week, following the first week of action in 2025. Among the ten winners, four University of Saskatchewan student-athletes were represented, including a Huskie clean sweep of the latest volleyball Players of the Week.

Gage Grassick – Women’s Basketball

All-Canadian talent Gage Grassick showed now signs of rust following the Christmas break, as the Huskie guard produced two impressive performances to help lead the Dogs to back-to-back wins over the MRU Cougars and extend their victory streak to eight games. In a tightly-contested first half, Grassick helped keep the Dogs withing striking distance, recording 12 of her 15 points and four of her five steals in the first 20 minutes.
The following evening on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court, Grassick put a different aspect of her game on display. The product of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was lights-out from beyond the arc, going 5-of-9 for the best shooting performance from any player who saw the floor. The rest of her ability did not slow down however, as she continued to find teammates for five assists and lockdown the Cougars for five steals and a block.
Through ten games this season Grassick has been one of the best all-round players in the nation, and has the stats to back it up. She ranks first in the nation in assists with 69, 10th in scoring averaging 16.9 points per game, and ninth in three-pointers made with 28. She also ranks third in Canada West assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3), fourth in three-point percentage (40.6), and sixth in steals (30), all while playing the fifth most minutes per game. This was also Grassick’s second Canada West BioSteel Player of the Week nod (Nov. 12, 2024).
Grassick and the rest of the Dogs will look to extend their win streak this weekend when they head to Winnipeg to take on the Wesmen is a pair of divisional matchups.
Chantz Petruic – Men’s Hockey

Veteran forward for the Huskie men’s hockey team, Chantz Petruic helped the Huskies to their fourth and fifth consecutive wins over the weekend in a U-Prairie Challenge, home-and-home series with the Regina Cougars. The fourth-year business student earned a five-point weekend as he continues to climb the Canada West scoring rankings and help propel the Dogs towards the Canada West playoffs.
In the first matchup of the weekend, Petruic recorded three points thanks two scores and an assist in a 6-3 road win. His first score of the weekend came just six minutes into the game after Dawson Holt found the sharp shooter alone in the slot on a man-advantage to tie things up at one apiece. After assisting on Ty Prefontaine’s second Huskie goal, he was back at it on the powerplay, scoring his second of the game after Holt once again found his linemate around the Cougar net. Petruic and Holt have been one reason why the Dogs boast the best powerplay in the country which is converting at a 33.3% rate.
The following night the Huskies were back on home ice, and the former ECHLer was back on the scoresheet. Petruic scored the fifth and seventh Huskie goals of the evening in a convincing 7-2 win for the Dogs. His first came thanks to a great play from Josh Pillar who maintained possession to find the Moose Jaw product for his first of two close-quarters goals on Saturday. After Cade Hayes made it a 6-2 game, Landon Kosior made the play to send the game into blowout territory after he found Petruic alone in front of the net for his second of the rivalry game and fourth of the weekend.
With his five-point weekend, Petruic now sits second in Canada West scoring with 11 goals and fifth in total points with 25 through 18 games this season.
Petruic and the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Huskies are back on home ice for the first of back-to-back weekend doubleheaders at Merlis Belsher Place this Friday (Jan. 17) and Saturday (Jan. 18) with the Manitoba Biosns set to visit Saskatoon.
Taryn Hannah – Women’s Volleyball

For the first time this season, a Huskie women’s volleyball student-athlete has been named Canada West BioSteel Player of the Week. Taryn Hannah, a third-year outside hitter for the Huskies, takes home the conference honours following a dominant weekend in Calgary. The Battleford product helped lead the Huskeis to a pair of convincing wins over the Calgary Dinos, sweeping their weekend series to kick off the new year.
In the first match between the Dogs and Dinos, Hannah produced a game-high 18.5 points on the way to a 3-1 USask lead thanks to 14 kills, and 4 aces with an impressive 39.3 hitting percentage. After the Huskies dropped the first set, Hannah helped orchestrate a 7-0 run midway through the second to help the visiting Dogs tie things up. She continued to contribute heavily as the Huskies captured third and fourth set wins to take the first match of the weekend.
Saturday night the former Brandon Bobcat once again led the match in scoring, recording 18.0 points and 15 kills while improving her hitting percentage to 43.3%. With Hannah picking up right where she left off the night before, the Huskies were once again able to dominate the home team, cruising to a straight-sets victory and sweep of the weekend series.
Hannah’s performances this past weekend were no outliers, as she continues a sensational season as one of the most effective hitters in the conference. She ranks third in points per set (4.2), fifth in kills per set (3.56) and twelfth in hitting percentage, converting on 26.8% of 351 attacks, which ranks as the tenth most. She has also been deadly from the service line, recording 19 aces, the sixth most in Canada West.
Hannah and the rest of the Dogs take their home court this weekend (Jan. 17 & 18) for the first time in 2025, looking to pick up another pair of wins against the MacEwan Griffins.
Isaiah Mamer – Men’s Volleyball

For the second time this season, Isaiah Mamer has been named the Canada West Men’s Volleyball BioSteel Player of the Week. Mamer, who has been one of the most productive players in Canada West this season, helped the USask men’s volleyball team to a pair of wins this past weekend as the Huskies continue to climb the conference standings.
On Friday night, Mamer was virtually unstoppable in a 3-1 decision for the Huskies. The leftside hitter recorded a game-high 24.0 points kills thanks to a incredible 50% hitting percentage. It was the second time this season in which Mamer has totalled more than 20 points and recorded a hitting percentage above 50%.
The following night, in a five-set thriller which came out Saskatchewan’s way, Mamer put on another productive performance, registering 16.5 points with 16 kills and a 30.6% hitting percentage. Hit performance helped the Huskies improve to 8-4 on the season and pick up a fifth consecutive win in conference play.
Through 12 matches this season, Mamer ranks among the conference’s best in several key statistical categories on offence including kills (6th, 154), points (7th, 169.5), and total attacks (6th, 357). He also been a key contributor defensively, recording the 13th most digs in Canada West with 76.
The Huskie men’s volleyball team is back in action this weekend (Jan. 17 & 18) with the MacEwan Griffins set to visit Saskatoon for a weekend doubleheader.
