QUICKLY
The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team dropped a tightly contested four-set match to Mount Royal on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded the first two sets, with Mount Royal winning the opener by a 25-19 score and Regina replying with an identical 25-19 victory in the second.
The third set saw Regina sprint out to a 9-0 lead as Cassadi Klapak went on an extended serving run to get the Cougars out to a huge lead. But Mount Royal regrouped after a timeout and the visitors reeled off an 11-2 run of their own to get right back into it. Regina built up a 19-15 lead and still led 24-22 after a Piper Harkness kill, but MRU shook off the two set points and won the set with an Emma Boyd ace that gave Mount Royal a 26-24 win.
The fourth set saw Regina jump out to multiple two-point leads, but three straight points by MRU out of a 15-15 tie gave them the lead for good. The Cougars were still within striking distance at 23-22, but Mount Royal got back-to-back points off kills by Bronwyn Davies-Neira and Boyd to clinch the four-set victory.
NOTES
Three different Mount Royal players hit double figures in kills including Sydney Scatcherd (15), Davies-Neira (14), and Mya Morgan (10).
Regina was led by Jordy McEachern in both kills (7) and digs (14).
Mount Royal improves to 8-5 with the win, while Regina dips to 4-9 after the setback.
NEXT UP
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS. First serve is again set for 6:00 PM.
