SASKATOON, Sask. – In what was a back and forth affair that came down to a thrilling extended fourth set, the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the visiting MacEwan Griffins for the second consecutive night by a final score of three sets to one (25-27, 25-16, 25-18, 36-24).
The result extends the Huskies’ win streak to four and boosts their season record to 7-7, vaulting them up one spot into seventh place in the Canada West standings.
The MacEwan loss means the Griffins remain winless at 0-12 as their squad continues to struggle in 2024-25.
After a season-high sixteen kill performance last night, Rosetta Cyr carried her momentum into Saturday, improving on Friday’s performance by recording a new season-high seventeen kills on 41 attacks. The Punnichy, SK product was also efficient with her offence, posting a .341 hitting percentage to go along with two service aces and 20.5 points scored.
Taryn Hannah once again put up a solid performance as the Huskies team-leader in kills, and kills per set, adding to her season total by tallying sixteen kills on 37 attacks while earning a .297 hitting percentage. The third year Business student also contributed with one service ace to round out her 17.5 point night.
MacEwan was again led by Griffins’ top offensive producer, Arden Butler who put up 16 kills on 48 attacks and earned a total of 16.5 points. However, Butler’s eight attack errors were the most by any hitter and her efficiency suffered as a result, posting a .167 kill percentage.
In a statistically even match, efficiency may have been the difference in Saskatchewan’s win as the Huskies 58 total kills came with a percentage of .245, whereas the Griffins were only able to post .169 on their 53 kills.
After MacEwan took the opening set, the Griffins looked on track to snap their winless streak, however the Griffins were unable to maintain their momentum in the second as their kill percentage fell to -.100, opening the door for Saskatchewan to take the set and even the match.
The third set saw the Huskies hit at a torrid clip of .591 with Hannah leading the charge as she issued four kills over the frame. The Huskies would eventually close out the set 25-18 thanks to a late service ace from Abby Klein and a kill from Rosetta Cyr on set point.
The opening minutes of the game’s final set would see the Huskies jump out to an early 15-10 lead, however MacEwan refused to go quietly as the Griffins rattled off five straight points to even the set 15-15. Later, with the score 24-22 and MacEwan facing match point, the Griffins continued to dig in their talons by winning the next three points to take a 25-24 advantage and flip the script on the Huskies. What followed was a flurry of intense back and forth rallies that saw both teams jostle to take the set, eventually landing at 34-33 and the Huskies now facing set point. However, a critical Griffins attack error would even the score and allow the Huskies to take the next two points and secure their fourth straight win.
The Huskies will now hit the road to take on the 5-7 Winnipeg Wesmen who sit one spot below the Dogs in the Canada West.
The Griffins will return home to try and find the win column as they battle it out with the 4-10 Regina Cougars.
