Cougars swept in three by Mount Royal

The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Mount Royal on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

SET-BY-SET RECAP

• Mount Royal couldn’t have asked for much of a better start to Saturday’s match as MRU reeled off five points in a row to start the opening set and jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Regina fought back and while the home side got to within one point of Mount Royal on four separate occasions, MRU was able to answer back each time and took the first by a 25-23 score.
• The two teams looked to again be headed towards a close battle in the second, but Mount Royal broke a 12-12 tie with four consecutive points as part of a 9-1 set-changing run which saw extended serving runs by both Grace Coulter and Emma Boyd. The U of R tried to answer and collected four straight late points, but Mount Royal quickly replied with three of its own and clinched a 25-18 win with a Sydney Scatcherd service ace.
• Regina bolted out to a 7-3 lead in the third, but Mount Royal quickly got back into it with a 6-1 run. Regina briefly took the lead at 13-11 before MRU took it right back, and the visitors never trailed the rest of the way. Mount Royal had two set points at 24-22 which Regina was able to evade with a Devyn Grimsrud kill and an MRU attack error, but Mount Royal answered back with a Bronwyn Davies-Neira kill before clinching the win with another Scatcherd ace.

NOTES

• Davies-Neira and Coulter both led the way with 10 kills for Mount Royal, which improves to 9-5 on the season.
• Devyn Grimsrud led Regina (4-10) offensively with nine kills.

The Cougars are back in action next weekend with a critical road series at MacEwan as they continue to battle for a Canada West postseason spot. Matches are scheduled for 5:00 PM (MT) on Friday and 3:00 PM on Saturday.
