BLUES WIN BIG TO OPEN WEEKEND IN WATERLOO

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team faced off against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Jan. 24) night at the Physical Activities Complex in Waterloo, Ont. The Blues emerged victorious in four sets, securing a 3-1 win to improve their record to 9-5 for the season.

The game started with strong energy from the Blues, who claimed the first set 25-20. However, the momentum briefly shifted in the second set, as the Warriors capitalized on their opportunities to take it 25-15. Toronto regained their rhythm in the third set, finishing with a 25-22 victory and carried their dominance into the fourth set with a commanding 25-14 finish. The Blues showcased their efficiency, hitting .579 in the final set, and their steady defense and teamwork proved decisive in overcoming Waterloo.

Individually, Luka Minic led the Blues attack with 10 kills and a stellar .909 hitting percentage, while Jayden Talsma followed closely with 11 points. Michael Hickey orchestrated the offense with 35 assists and added a service ace. On the defensive front, Iannis Toma contributed with two block assists, while Minic led the team in total points with 12.5.

The Waterloo Warriors, now 5-9 on the season, were led by Lucas Redmann, who recorded a match-high 13 kills. Nolan Reed added eight kills and a service ace, and AJ Nichols chipped in seven kills and four block assists. Despite their efforts, Waterloo’s 23 service errors ultimately hindered their performance.

The Blues victory solidifies their position as a team to watch this season. Their next matchup against the Warriors, on Saturday (Jan. 24), promises to be an exciting continuation of their momentum. First serve in Waterloo, Ont. is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the game available to be streamed on oua.tv.
