Queen’s Women’s Volleyball returned to the ARC on Friday to take on the Western Mustangs—the Gaels walked away with a three-set victory (25-15, 25-18, 25-22).
Heading into the match, the Gaels and the Mustangs stood first and second respectively in the OUA standings.
“Preparation stays the same for any opponent. A lot of the focus is on our side and what were doing from the service line, how were moving defensively, and working through our offense. I think the girls did a tremendous job against a tough team,” Head Coach Shanice Marcelle said.
Queen’s opened up the match firing on all cylinders. With kills from Aimee Lemire (Education), Hannah Duchesneau (Arts & Science), and Mary Stewart (Education) the Gaels took off and bagged the set.
“I think we had a great crowd, and I think that always helps performance when the fans get involved,” Marcelle remarked.
The Gaels maintained their momentum through the second and quickly pulled ahead of the Mustangs.
Middles Amanda Siksna (Education) and Christine Abu (Arts & Science), shut down Western’s attacks with ease, building brick walls at the net.
Queen’s rounded out the match with 12 blocks to the Mustang’s three. Siksna added eight and Abu added three.
The Mustangs fought back through the third, pushing to tie up the game at the 15-point mark. The Gaels regained control of the match, going for a five-point run and securing the set.
While Queen’s put on an impressive offensive show, they also maintained a confident defensive presence.
“Holly did a fantastic job in serve receive and on defense. I think she really anchored our team in that sense and allowed Kennedy to run a nice balanced offense,” Marcelle remarked.
In the win, Lemire led the team in points with 17.5, and in kills with 17. Lemire added a hitting percentage of .557.
“Aimee has such a variety of shots and that was really on display today. She really utilized her entire toolbox.” Marcelle commented.
With the win, Women’s Volleyball’s record on the season improves to 14-1 and their win steak extends to 12.
“We have big goals and big dreams, so the girls are determined to make it happen,” Marcelle said.
The Gaels return to the ARC on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4pm, to take on the Mustangs for a second time. Tickets are free for students and available on the Queen’s ticket website.
