The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team hosted the Guelph Gryphons on Friday (Jan. 31) night at Goldring Centre in their first home game of 2025, in which they secured a 3-0 victory in front of a spirited home crowd.
This game showcased Toronto’s dominance from the start, as they controlled every set with impressive offensive efficiency and defensive composure. The Blues opened strong, winning the first set 25-13. They maintained their momentum throughout the second and third sets, claiming them with scores of 25-15 and 25-18, respectively. The team’s impressive attack percentage of .395 highlighted their offensive prowess, while consistent blocking and digs limited the Guelph attack.
Toronto’s standout performers played key roles in the victory. Jayden Talsma led the team in kills with 15, hitting at an impressive .636 efficiency. Michael Hickey orchestrated the attack with a game-high 31 assists while contributing six points, including two blocks and an ace. Hunter Arulpragasam was a force at the net with eight kills and 10.5 total points, while Iannis Toma delivered two service aces and nine points overall.
Guelph struggled to find their rhythm against Toronto’s relentless play. They posted a team attack percentage of just .071, with leading scorer Alexander Odle contributing seven kills. Despite moments of solid play, particularly in the third set, the Gryphons were unable to match the Blues’ consistent performance.
With this emphatic home victory, the Blues improve to a 10-5 record. Toronto’s next game is on Saturday, Feb. 1 against the Gryphons at 4 p.m., with the match-up promising more excitement as they continue their push towards a postseason berth.
