Defence powers Dinos to sweep of Brandon

BRANDON, Man.Robyn McLean finished with team highs in kills (nine) and digs (11) while also racking up a career-high five aces to help power the Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Brandon Saturday night from the Healthy Living Centre.

The sweep is the second in a row for Calgary, needing a little extra work in the opener before breezing through the second and third, 26-24, 25-18, 25-16.

Calgary dominated the night on the night, finishing with 10 total blocks in the three setter and limiting the Bobcats to hit just .052 as a team.

The Dinos opened the night scoring six of the first seven points of the night to pick up right where they left off following Friday’s sweep. But, Brandon responded nicely, battling back and taking a 10-9 lead of their own after an ace from Carly Thomson. Back-to-back kills from Daisy Olsen put Calgary back on top 20-13, only to once again see the home squad show their grit with a 7-0 run to tie things back up. But a kill from Sophia Hansen follow by a block from Hansen and Kaylyn Tanton pushed the Dinos over the finish line to take the opener.

From there, it was seemingly all Calgary. Trailing 8-7 early, the Dinos used an 8-1 run in the second to go up big and never look back for the 2-0 lead.

With the two squads tied up at 11-11 in the third, the Scarlet & Gold used runs of 5-0 and 6-1 to complete the sweep and head home with another win.

The Dinos move to 6-12 on the year as they continue to try to chase down a playoff berth down the home stretch.

Calgary is now on bye next weekend before closing out the regular season Feb. 14-15 at MacEwan.
