Queen’s Men’s Volleyball traveled to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders on Friday evening—the Gaels secured a five-set win (21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 15-11).

Through the first, the teams went point for point, with both teams performing well on offense. The Gaels closed out the first set with a hit percentage of .429 while the Marauders achieve a percentage of .571.

Towards the end of the set, Queen’s fell behind slightly, causing the Marauders to take the set.

The Gaels took charge in the second set and maintained a consistent three-point lead.

Queen’s secured the last four points of the set with aggressive serves from Reed Venning (Arts & Science) leading to errors on McMaster’s side of the net.

In the third, the Gaels maintained their aggressive offense, causing the Marauders to crack.

Kills from Zig Licis (Computer Engineering) and Lachlan McBride (Law) propelled them forwards to take the set with a dominate 19-25 performance.

Licis and McBride put up significant numbers for the Gaels. Licis amassed 14 kills and McBride secured 13.

The Marauders came back from behind in the fourth set. Errors on Queens’ side of the net allowed McMaster to take the set and force a fifth.

The Gaels dug deep in the fifth and secured the match with a final service ace from Licis.

Licis rounded out the match with three service aces. Venning added another three for the Gaels.

Setter Chris Zimmerman (Arts) ran the Gael’s offense smoothly with 39 assists. Zimmerman also contributed on defense with 13 digs.

The Gaels look for another victory on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 8pm, taking on the Marauders once more. Fans can catch the action on oua.tv.
