MONTREAL – Two members of the McGill University women’s volleyball team have merited conference all-star honours in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.
Elyssa Lajmi, a native of Thionville, in northeastern France, was named to the RSEQ first team, while Rachel Leduc of Montreal, merited a berth on the second team.
The division-leading Montreal Carabins and second-place Sherbrooke each had three players earn all-star status, while McGill, Laval, UQAM and UQTR had two players apiece,
Lajmi, 22, is a first-year member of the Martlets who is working on a certificate of proficiency in English for professional communication. The six-foot power-hitter led the league with 237 kills and ranked second in kills-per-set (3.25). She accounted for 29 per cent of the team’s 822 kills and was fifth among RSEQ leaders in scoring (3.77 points per set).
Lajmi also ranked eighth in digs (2.59 per set) and 15th in hitting efficiency (.221). She added 14 service aces, 22 assists, 11 stuff blocks and 26 assisted blocks. In 21 regular season games, she saw action in 73 of the team’s 77 sets played.
Leduc, a 23-year-old management senior, is majoring in finance. The 6-foot-1, right-side hitter was second on the team in scoring with 2.73 points per set, which ranked 14th among league leaders.
Leduc, who appeared in 75 of the team’s 77 sets played, tallied 172 kills, ranked 12th among league leaders in kills per set (2.29) and was 20th in kill efficiency (.192). A product of Collège Jean-Eudes in Montreal, she bypassed the CEGEP system and began her collegiate career with Camosun College in Alberta before transferring to McGill in 2022.
In a vote conducted by the league’s eight head coaches, Sherbrooke had two of the four major awards handed out, with Jael Esther Telfort winning athlete of the year honours and Beatrice Dubreuil earning the rookie-of-the-year award. Laval’s Beatrice Lamarche won the conference’s Leadership and Citizenship Award, while Olivier Trudel of the Montreal Carabins was named coach of the year.
