KINGSTON, Ont. (March 3, 2025) – Marthe Laplante Brady, Ollie Engen, Zig Licis and Holden Katzalay have been named the Queen’s University Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario, for their performances over this past weekend.
Laplante Brady (Applied Science) captured a bronze medal in the 72 kg category at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championship at Brock University this past weekend.
The decorated medalist secured a podium finish by defeating Elidh Wist of the University of Calgary by fall in the bronze medal match.
Engen (Kinesiology) delivered a dominant performance in Queen’s Men’s Basketball’s thrilling 64-62 Semi-Finals victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at the ARC. The rookie led all scorers with a game-high 26 points while adding six rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes of action.
With the hard-fought win, the Gaels secured a spot in the Wilson Cup final for the second straight season. The championship matchup is set for Saturday, March 8, in the nation’s capital, with tipoff at 8 pm.
Licis (Computer Engineering) was the key catalyst in Queen’s Men’s Volleyball’s Semi-Finals showdown against the Western Mustangs, contributing to a nail-biting 3-2 victory at the ARC.
The fifth-year outside hitter delivered a memorable performance, setting multiple season highs on both ends of the court. Licis recorded a season- and game-high 23 kills, a season-best six aces, and tallied a season-high 32.5 points along with six blocks.
With the victory, the Gaels now focus on the OUA Forsyth Cup Championship, with the only thing standing in their way – the No. 1-ranked Windsor Lancers in the OUA. The Finals are scheduled for Friday, March 7, in Windsor, Ont., with first serve set for 7 p.m.
Katzalay (Computing) of the Queen’s Men’s Hockey had himself a night, notching two goals and three assists in Friday’s dominating 7-3 victory against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in game two of the best-of-three series.
With the series sweep, the Gaels shift attention to the OUA Semifinals against the OUA No. 1-ranked Concordia Stingers. Game 1 is set for Wednesday, March 5, in Montreal, QC, with puck drop at 7 pm.
