EDMONTON – Born in Italy, raised in France, Luigi Ehui didn’t really get into volleyball until his family moved to Saskatchewan four years ago.

So, the newest MacEwan Griffins men’s volleyball recruit is raw, still learning the game, but his potential is high to one day make an impact at the Canada West level.

For now, the 6-foot-4 product of Pontiex, Sask. will redshirt with the Griffins in 2025-26.

“He’s newer to volleyball, so I’d say he’s a little raw,” said MacEwan head coach Brad Poplawski. “But he’s just very athletic. When we had him out on his recruiting trip, Patrick (Zimmermann, assistant coach) was working him through some drills and it was ‘wow, this guy has the potential to be quite good, he just needs to learn the game a little more and be around it at a high level.’

“He’s going to redshirt for us next year, but I think in a couple years he’s a guy who could be on the court for us with his athleticism.”

After graduating from École Boréale in Pontiex, Sask., Ehui, who was born in Milan, Italy, joined the ACAC’s Concordia Thunder as a redshirt at Christmas last season, as he began to learn the nuances of university volleyball. Now his training will continue at the U SPORTS level.

“Next year’s a great opportunity for us to work on his skills with the understanding that he doesn’t have to play on the weekend,” said Poplawski. “He can just come here and learn and work, and he seemed excited about that opportunity. He’s long, has a good spike touch, and is a good athlete.”
