Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Kale Orr
Rookie Kale Orr led men’s volleyball to a double victory over MacEwan in Edmonton last weekend.
On Friday night the outside hitter persevered in a five-set battle with the Griffens, collecting 29 kills and 31 points to secure a 3-2 win for the Cougars. The next night Orr once again contributed with 11 kills and 12 points to help MRU earn a 3-0 victory over GMU.
Enrolled in Mount Royal’s Bachelor of Business Administration, Orr is from Magrath, Alberta.
The Cougars presently have six wins and two losses so far this season and will head to Edmonton to face the Golden Bears this weekend.
Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Julia Duke
Forward Julia Duke was a key contributor to the women’s hockey victories over the University of Regina last weekend.
On Friday night in the first period Duke assisted teammate Ava Metzger to open scoring in the game. MRU led 2-0 at the end of the first period and there were no further goals until Regina scored early in the third. Not long after Duke answered, scoring to secure a 3-1 victory for Mount Royal.
The next day the game started in a stalemate with neither team getting past a goalie on either side in the first period. MRU found success in the second period and Duke added to her team’s success with an empty net goal in the third period to wrap up the weekend with a 4-0 Mount Royal win.
Duke is in her third-year and hails from Emerald Park. Saskatchewan.
Last weekend’s success brings Mount Royal’s winning streak to nine games and their season record to 10 wins and two losses. This week they will travel to BC to face Trinity Western University.
