REDS Hold Off Tigers

(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS remain unbeaten in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball play after a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday afternoon in Halifax.

UNB established a two-sets-to-none lead, taking the first two sets 25-16 and 25-17 before the Tigers rallied.

Dal forced the deciding set with 25-18 and 25-14 wins in sets three and four.

A hard-fought fifth set ended on a Tigers attack error, giving UNB a 15-11 win and the 3-2 victory.

“I’m proud of the effort and execution from our team today,” said veteran REDS hitter Sonya Nielsen. “We truly showed what it means to be resilient and unlocked a new level of competing with both grittiness and joy.”

Nielsen had 11 kills Saturday.

Lydia Green led the REDS with 16 kills and 13 digs while Jenna Adams had 21 digs and Talia Nixon contributed 37 assists, 14 digs, and a pair of blocks.

“This weekend’s wins over Dal were a great way to open the second semester and set the tone for what’s ahead,” said REDS’ head coach Lauren Hale-Miller. “Our group battled through the ups and downs of matches, staying committed, patient, and composed in key moments.”

Annik Bolden registered 19 kills and 17 digs for the Tigers. Mel Hatfield and Paris Steward added 14 kills and 18 digs respectively.

“We played high level volleyball on both sides of the ball and embraced the battle, showing grit and toughness. The team leaned into the physicality and competitiveness of the matches. In doing so, they set a new standard for our level of play, one we’re excited to continue building on as we move forward.”

The REDS are now 12-0 and continue to lead the AUS standings. The Tigers fall to 3-8.

The REDS now return home and will prepare to host the Acadia Axewomen in a two-match series beginning Friday. First serve is set for 8:00pm.

The Tigers will visit Moncton the same evening.
