The 2–10 Mount Royal Cougars welcomed the 3–9 Winnipeg Wesmen to Kenyon Court on Friday night for women’s volleyball action. Playing at home for the first time in 2026, the Cougars looked to snap an eight-game losing streak against a Wesmen team coming off a split series against MacEwan last weekend.
The Cougars got off to a strong start on home court, jumping out to an early 8-5 lead in the opening set. Outside hitter Bronwynn Davies-Neira recorded two early kills, while Sydney Scatcherd applied pressure from the service line.
Winnipeg responded to level the set at 14-14, led by left-side hitter Brooke Duncalfe and outside hitter Ella Werbiski. The Wesmen then extended their advantage to 20-16, forcing MRU to take a timeout.
Winnipeg maintained control down the stretch, taking the opening set 25-18.
The second set opened as a tightly contested affair, with both teams trading points early. A strong kill from MRU middle blocker Mya Morgan gave the Cougars a brief 10-9 advantage.
Megan Kendziora continued to pace the Wesmen offensively in the second set, helping Winnipeg maintain a narrow 18-17 advantage late in the frame. The Wesmen held on to take the second set 25–19.
The Cougars opened the third set strong behind middle Faith Obasi, as two Aurora Bentrim kills helped MRU build a 14–10 advantage. The home side continued to roll, stretching the lead to its largest of the night at 19–11, before the Wesmen answered back to cut the deficit to 19–15.
The Cougars did not look back from there, with a Bronwynn Davies-Neira service ace closing out the third set, 25–19.
The teams were tied at 10 early in the fourth set, and the frame remained tight as both sides searched for a momentum shift. Winnipeg’s Megan Kendziora delivered a key kill late, giving the Wesmen a 21–20 advantage.
Winnipeg carried that momentum through the closing points, taking the fourth set 25–21.
The Wesmen secured the Friday night victory in four sets, winning the match 3–1.
Player of the Game: Paige Davidson finished with five digs and three assists, providing steady defensive play throughout the match.
