MVB: Mount Royal opens play-in series with win over Dinos

Hosting the University of Calgary Dinos in a cross-town play-in matchup on Saturday night, the 9–11 Cougars outlasted the 8–12 Dinos in a season-defining Crowchild Classic at Kenyon Court, helping punch their ticket into the postseason in front of a loud and energized home crowd. With both teams’ seasons hanging in the balance, the match carried a heightened sense of urgency from first serve to final point.

Mount Royal set the tone early, taking the opening set 25–20 to establish control and settle into the moment. Calgary responded with urgency in the second, flipping momentum and pulling away for a 25–16 win to level the contest and keep its playoff hopes alive. The back-and-forth nature of the opening sets reflected the pressure of a winner-take-all scenario, with neither side willing to give an inch.

From there, Mount Royal leaned on composure, depth, and experience to steady the match. The Cougars reclaimed momentum by closing out the third set 25–20, then carried that confidence into the fourth, once again edging the Dinos 25–20 to close out the match and end Calgary’s season.

Offensively, Mount Royal was led by Kale Orr, who finished with a match-high 22 kills, providing a reliable scoring presence whenever the Cougars needed it most. Calgary countered behind Erik Godwin, who recorded 12 kills and helped keep the Dinos competitive through long stretches of play.

“We focused on executing the little things and staying composed when it mattered,” said Kale Orr. “Now we’re excited to bring that momentum home tomorrow and keep building.” 

Beyond the stat line, Mount Royal’s ability to execute in key moments proved decisive. Strong serving pressure, disciplined net play, and consistent defensive coverage allowed the Cougars to control critical rallies and limit Calgary’s opportunities to swing momentum late in sets. Backed by a vocal Kenyon Court crowd, MRU played with confidence and purpose, turning the pressure of the moment into focused execution.
