MacEwan Athletics and Alberta Athletics
EDMONTON – Showing some promise at times, the Griffins were unfortunately unable to put together a full semblance of resistance in a straight-sets loss to cross-town rival Alberta on Friday night at the Saville Centre.
The trailed the entire match to the U SPORTS No. 6, save for the opening point of the third set, and lost 25-14, 25-14, 25-17.
Fabian Breitenbach led the Griffins with five kills, while Jarod Robert had four kills on a .571 hitting percentage.
Alberta was paced by Jacob Sargent with nine kills, while Matt Shand had seven and Dylan Martens six.
The Golden Bears had 35 kills on just 53 attacks with .500 efficiency, compared to MacEwan’s .119.
Alberta hopped out to an early 10-2 lead in the opening set, forcing both MacEwan timeouts to be burned as they tried to contend with an offence hitting .625 at that point. Breitenbach, the lefty standout for the Griffins, was terrific at times with a team-high three kills, but he was a lone bright spot in a 25-14 Alberta set win.

While the second set was closer in score, the story was still similar, with a ferocious Bears attack hitting .533 in the frame to the Griffins goose egg .000. Keegan Hanrahan was stellar at the net for the Griffins recording two total blocks.
The third set was more of the same, with Sargent impressing for the Bears with five kills.
The teams return to action Saturday for the swan song of the regular season (7 p.m., Saville Centre, Canada West TV).
