The 6–7 Mount Royal Cougars hosted the 7–6 Winnipeg Wesmen at Kenyon Court on Saturday. Coming off a straight-sets win the night before, Winnipeg aimed for a weekend sweep, while the Cougars sought a crucial victory ahead of the playoff push.
The opening set featured a tight battle, with neither team establishing any separation. Led by Kale Orr and Isaac Karstad, the Cougars matched Winnipeg point for point, tied 8–8 early. Big kills from Winnipeg’s Jaxon Rose and MRU’s Cody Hudson also highlighted the action.
A service ace from Wesmen outside hitter Aidan Hruska opened a three-point cushion, prompting an MRU timeout at 17–14. The Cougars responded with a five-point run to take a 21–20 lead and closed out the set 25–23, capped by a massive kill from setter Grant Hill.
The second set saw extended rallies as both teams fought for every point. MRU built a 13–10 edge behind strong net play and consistent blocking. Hudson and Orr extended the lead to 21–17, but Winnipeg responded with four unanswered points, tying the set at 21. An important kill from Michael McAlpine regained the lead for MRU, and a Ryan John kill closed the set 25–23.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 4–1 lead in the third, with Hudson tying the set at 11 with his ninth kill. Late in the set, Orr recorded his 17th kill and Rose added his 10th, keeping it close. A Krykewich service ace ultimately gave Winnipeg a 33–31 win.
Orr notched his 20th kill early in the fourth to help MRU take a 6–3 lead. Winnipeg surged late, with middle Paxton Koop leading a five-point run to an 18–13 advantage. The Cougars fought back to 21–19, forcing a Wesmen timeout, but Winnipeg held on to take the set 25–22, making for a decisive fifth.
With the match tied at two sets apiece, both teams understood the urgency to secure the win. Every point mattered, and the Cougars and Wesmen showed why toughness and determination were on full display in the decisive frame. Deep into the match, both teams leaned on their depth, with every player contributing in the battle for victory.
The Wesmen held the lead late, 14–13, thanks in part to two more huge kills from Rose. A big block from Wesmen middle Easton Dick helped Winnipeg pull off the comeback win, taking the match 3–2 and completing the sweep against the Cougars at home.
Player of the Game: #2 Kale Orr, recording a career-best 29 kills, showcased his scoring power throughout the match.
