The week of February 26th– 28th saw members of the women’s Canadian national team continue to impress overseas. Two exciting match-ups took place in Turkey and Italy, where fellow Canadians went head-to-head. Kiera Van Ryk and Emily Maglio squared off in Turkey, while Alexa Gray and Alicia Ogoms faced off in Italy. Stay tuned to see which Canadians came out of their matches victorious.
As pro-league seasons begin to near their end, anticipation runs high. The spotlight of this piece will centre around Canadian outside hitter Andrea Mitrovic and her team, A.O Thiras, as they pursue the title of Greek Cup champions.

France – Ligue A
Hilary Howe and Brie King, athletes of Béziers Volley, conceded a 0-3 loss to Chamalières who handily took the match on February 26th.
Another unfortunate loss came on February 26th for Vicky Savard as her team, Terville Florange Olympique Club, lost a close four-set battle to Le Cannet with the final score reading 1-3.
Shainah Joseph and her team, Vandoeuvre Nancy Volley-Ball, suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss on February 26th with the recorded score reading 2-3 in favour of opponent France Avenir 2024.
Five-set matches are thrilling to watch and even more so when a Canadian comes out on top. On February 26th, Kim Robitaille and her team, Saint-Raphaël Var Volley-Ball, bounced back against Marcq en Baroeul to triumph with a 3-2 victory.
France – Ligue B
M.O.Mougins Volley Ball, home to Caroline Livingston, did not have a match the week of February 26th-28th. Keep up to date on Livingston’s matches by following her team’s Instagram @momouginsvb.
Turkey – Sultans League
Not all alliances last forever. This sentiment would ring true for a match on February 28th between NİLÜFER BLD and TÜRK HAVA YOLLARI that had Canadian fans glued to the scoreboard. Canadian superstars Kiera Van Ryk and Emily Maglio faced off against each other in Turkey in what was a gruelling four-set match. The final scoreboard read 3-1 in favour of Kiera Van Ryk and her team, TÜRK HAVA YOLLARI.
Italy – A1
Another highly anticipated match for Canadian fans took place on February 27th between Alexa Gray’s Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio and Alicia Ogom’s Volley Bergamo 1991. Like their Canadian accomplices in Turkey, these two Canadians would face off in an exciting four-set match. Though we wish both Canadians could have come out of this match victorious, the 3-1 W was handed to Alexa Gray and her team Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio.
Switzerland – NLA
Oakville, ON native Melissa Langegger and her team Volley Lugano enjoyed a bye-week. Stay tuned to the Volley Lugano Instagram (@volleyluganoofficial) for Langegger’s upcoming matches.
Greece
Panathinaikos V.C, home to Canada’s Jennifer Cross, triumphed with a 3-1 win over opponent AEK.
Andrea Mitrovic and her team, A.O Thiras, claimed a commanding 3-0 win against ΑΟΝ Αμαζόνε to advance from the quarterfinal of the Greek Cup. Stay tuned for more on Mitrovic and her team as they work toward claiming the Greek Cup championship in the spotlight down below.
Germany – Bundesliga
Jazmine White of Schwarz-Weiß Erfurt joined her Canadian counterpart Melissa Langegger in a well-deserved bye-week. Keep up to date on when White returns to the court by following @schwarzweisserfurt on Instagram.
Unfortunately, there was no other Canadian domination in Germany this past week as Layne Van Buskirk and her team Dresdner Sportclub were forced to cancel their match due to COVID-19 regulations.
Finland – Mestaruusliiga
On February 26th, Puijo Wolley home to Natasha Calkins and Courtney Baker suffered a 0-3 loss vs. LP Viesti.
Spotlight

Etobicoke, ON native, Andrea Mitrovic has continued to impress Canadian fans as she dominates in Greece with her team, A.O Thiras. Whether it’s her calm, cool and collected playing style, her gnarly spike touch, or her tenacity, Mitrovic continues to improve and mature as a player at an accelerating pace. The 22-year-old phenom is seeing gross success overseas in Greece as her team gears up to play in the semi-finals of the Greek Cup. After a dominating win that claimed a quarter-final victory, Mitrovic and her team are looking forward to their semi-final match and a chance to claim the title of Greek Cup champions. I graduated in spring of 2021 from Western University with a major in Media, Information and Techno-culture and a minor in Writing Studies.
