The stars of the Canadian women’s national team have been representing the maple leaf in their respective countries and professional leagues for the fall/winter season. These athletes are proving their talent and making a name for themselves overseas. While many of the Canadian women are dominating in their leagues, one of the most notable is Alexa Gray. For more information on how Gray’s season is going including her impressive statistics check out the spotlight feature later on in this article. But first up, let’s take a closer look at how the Canadian women have been doing in their pro leagues.
France – Ligue A
Hilary Howe and Brie King are currently playing for the same club, Béziers Volley, in France. The two secured a 3-0 win with their team on February 6th vs. Evreux Volleyball, and another 3-0 win vs Paris St Cloud on Feb 12. But they lost in straight sets to Turkey’s Fenerbahce on February 15.
Vicky Savard and her team, Terville Florange Olympique Club, also triumphed with a 3-0 win on February 6th vs. Paris St-Cloud. Terville Florange went on to defeat Vandoeuvre Nancy (see below) 3-0 on February 12.
Vandoeuvre Nancy Volley Ball, home to Shainah Joseph played on February 1st and pulled out a 3-1 win against Marcq en Baroeul, but lost in straight sets to Vicky Savard and her Terville Florange team.
Kim Robitaille of Saint-Raphaël Var Volley-Ball played in a close five-set match on February 6th with the final score showing 2-3 in favor of opponent, Nantes. Robitaille and her team also lost in straight sets to Le Cannet, and then 3 sets to 1 to Chamalieres.
France – Ligue B
Kelowna, BC native, Caroline Livingston, is playing for Municipal Olympique De Mougins. The team just secured a big win this past weekend at Harnes to ensure qualification for play-offs.
Turkey – Sultans League
Kiera Van Ryk of TÜRK HAVA YOLLARI pulled out a massive 3-2 win to end a five-set thriller vs. FENERBAHÇE OPET. They went on to beat KARAYOLLARI in straight sets on February 11, before grabbing another close five set win, this one against DUKLA LIBEREC on February 15. Lots of wins coming Kiera’s way!
NİLÜFER BLD athlete, Emily Maglio, played on February 6th and unfortunately fell to MERT GRUP SİGORTA who pulled out a three-set win, and lost again in straight sets on February 12 to VAKIFBANK.
Italy – A1
Alexa Gray, athlete for Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio, suffered a 0-3 loss vs. Savino Del Bene Scandicci on February 6th. Her team also lost on February 12 to Imoca Volley, but rebounded to a three set win agains Cuneo Granda Volley on February 16. Gray has performed exceptionally well this season delivering some impressive statistics. Keep reading to learn more about Alexa down below.
Alicia Ogoms and her team, Volley Bergamo 1991, just missed a win over VBC Transporti Pesanti Casalmaggiore who squeaked out the five-set thriller 3-2. But Ogoms came out on top on February 13, when her team secured a win in four sets against Bartoccini PG.
Switzerland – NLA
Melissa Langegger and her team, Volley Lugano, played back-to-back matches on February 4th and February 5th. Langegger’s team lost their first match vs. TS Volley Dudingen on the 4th leaving the score 1-3. The team bounced back on the 5th to secure a win vs. Geneve Volley with an impressive final score of 3-1.
Greece
Panathinaikos V.C athlete, Jennifer Cross, saw a 3-0 victory in her matchup against ΑΟ Λαμίας on February 6th, and another 3-0 victory on February 12 vs Aonnnne Amazones. Cross also came out on top in a tightly contested five set match vs Markopoulo.
A.O Thiras athlete, Andrea Mitrovic recorded 3-0 win over Markopoulou on February 5, but then just recently lost in five sets against Aris on February 12. Mitrovic’s team is scheduled to play off against Jennifer Cross’ team in just a few days.
Germany – Bundesliga
Schwarz-Weiß Erfurt, home to athlete, Jazmine White, had to reschedule their match to February 8th. The team recorded a 1-3 loss vs. Rote Raben Vilsbiburg.
Layne Van Buskirk playing for Dresdner Sportclub suffered a loss vs. Developres RZESZÓW on February 2nd leaving the score 0-3.
Finland – Mestaruusliiga
Natasha Calkins and Courtney Baker, both athletes of Puijo Wolley defeated opponent Oriveden liikuntahalli in a big five-set match to record a score of 3-2 on February 5th.

Spotlight
Alexa Gray, 6’1” outside hitter has made a name for herself both home in Canada and overseas in Italy. Gray has been a member of the Canadian Indoor Senior National team since 2017 and currently plays for Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio in Italy. The Calgary native boasts an impressive resume with her statistics rivalling some of the best athletes in the top Italian league. Gray is currently ranked third for Best Scorer with a total of 288 points. She is also ranked third for Best Attacker with a success rate of 47.31%. Gray is fortunate to play alongside Jordyn Poulter, team USA Olympic setter, whose connection with her outside hitter is undeniable. However, Gray does not only dominate offensively, she is also an exceptional technical passer. Gray is currently ranked first as the Best Receiver with a success rate of 29.76%. The future is looking bright for Gray as she continues to dominate the Canadian and international scene.
