FREDERICTON, NB – The UNB REDS remain undefeated, beating the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a five set thriller (22-25, 25-14, 14-25, 25-15, 15-11) in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.
The Huskies went to work right away, building an early 18-11 lead on their way to a 25-22 first set win.
The REDS responded in the second set with much tougher defending and won 25-14 to even the match.
The third set saw the Huskies respond with some defence of their own. They limited the REDS to just 14 points in a 25-14 set win.
UNB forced the deciding set with a strong 25-15 performance in the fourth, riding the serving of first year RED Haylee Ellis, who served the final four points of the set.
In the fifth, UNB built an early 4-0 lead and then held on to win the 15-11 and take the match.
Lydia Green led the REDS with a match-high 22 kills. She also had 13 digs and four blocks, and was named the Tim Horton’s Player of the Game. Heather Benko pitched in with 15 kills and five service aces. Talia Nixon put up 44 assists and Isla Olesen and Danielle Krzywonos each had half a dozen blocks.
Emilia Mikanovich had 18 kills for the Huskies while Tevary Robson recorded 13 digs and Taylor Lougheed registered 32 assists.
With the win the REDS improve to 18-0 and still lead the Atlantic University Sport standings. The Huskies, now tied for second place, are 8-9.
UNB returns to action on Friday when they travel to Moncton for a 7:00pm start. The REDS play their final regular season home game the following Friday, February 13th, when they host les Aigles Bleues.
Saint Mary’s returns home and will host Acadia on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Homburg Centre. GET TICKETS
