REDS Down Tigers In Five Setter

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS dominated the fifth and deciding set to beat the Dalhousie Tigers 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball action, Friday evening at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.

The REDS won the opening set 25-18 before dropping an extended second set 24-26.

Dal took the second set 25-23 before UNB was able to rebound and win the fourth 25-18.

In the deciding set, the REDS won the first four points and the last five to win 15-3 and take the match 3-2.

A balanced UNB attack saw three REDS with double-digit kills.

Heather Benko led the way with 15 kills and 11 digs. Lydia Green registered 11 kills and 15 digs, and Sonya Nielsen had 10 kills.

Talia Nixon had a dozen digs and 41 assists and was named Tim Horton’s Player of the Game, and Jenna Adams recorded 20 digs.

Defensively, Isla Olesen and Danielle Krzywonos each put up eight blocks.

Mel Hatfield led the Tigers with 10 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks.

Ella Hornby registered 15 kills while Paris Stewart had eight kills and 11 digs.

Madelyn MacLaughlin had 33 assists, and Alessandra Nadalini recorded a dozen digs.

The REDS are now 2-and-0 to start the season. Dal is 1-and-2.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm.
