(WOLFVILLE, NS) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team is still unbeaten, but they really had to work Sunday to keep it that way.
UNB rallied from two sets down to beat the Acadia Axewomen 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport action in Wolfville.
The Axewomen went up 2-0, winning the opening set 25-20 and taking the second 25-19.
In the third set, the REDS used a 4-0 run to open a 21-9 lead before another 4-0 run to close out the set 25-12.
In the fourth, UNB rode a 5-0 run to a 19-9 lead and another 4-0 run to, once again, win the set 25-12 and tie the match.
In the deciding set, the REDS momentum was unchecked. They used a 5-0 run to build an insurmountable 12-3 lead.
Acadia did mount a late challenge, but UNB won 15-7 win to complete the comeback.
“Being down 0-2, we just needed to get back to who we are,” said REDS’ head coach Lauren Hale-Miller. “Once we settled and trusted each other, the match shifted.”
Lydia Green led the REDS with 16 kills, 15 digs, four blocks, and 25 points.
“I’m proud of the way we all quickly flipped the switch and played three very dominant sets,” said Green. “That’s the way we’ve been playing all season.”
Heather Benko was a force, registering 17 kills, 11 digs, and 20 points, while Talia Nixon contributed 15 digs and 39 assists.
Jenna Adams had 18 digs and Isla Olesen put up five blocks.
“We showed a lot of composure, stayed connected, and worked through it,” said Coach Hale-Miller. “We finished the match with a statement, and I’m proud of this group’s effort.”
Alexia May-Evans had 18 kills and 14 digs for the Axewomen while Katie MacLean added a dozen digs and 28 assists.
UNB continues to sit atop the AUS standings with a 9-0 record while the Axewomen are now 2-7.
The REDS close out the 2025 portion of their schedule on Friday night when they host Moncton. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.
