(MONCTON, NB) The UNB REDS beat the l’Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues in straight sets Friday night, tying the Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball record for most wins in a season with their 19th victory.
The REDS won with scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-16.
“Our goal hasn’t been to go undefeated, it was to compete at the highest level we’re capable of, and that’s what this team continues to do,” said REDS’ head coach Lauren Hale-Miller. “Tying the AUS record reflects the consistency, discipline, and work this group puts in every day.”
Talia Nixon led the REDS with six kills and 17 assists while Heather Benko recorded eight kills and 16 digs.
Sonya Nielsen contributed seven kills and 10 digs, Lydia Green had eight kills and two blocks, Jenna Adams registered 10 digs, and Danielle Krzywonos put up three blocks.
Moncton’s Mia Ladd 14 digs and 23 assists, both match highs, while Tori Casey struck 10 kills and Jasmine Allain collected 10 digs.
UNB joins three Dalhousie teams that recorded 19 wins. The Tigers won 19 matches in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2019-20.
UNB is now 19-0 and sit atop the AUS standings with 38 points.
Moncton is now 2-16 and in sixth place.
“We still have work ahead of us and this team is locked in on continuing to get better,” said Coach Hale-Miller. “I’m incredibly proud of this team and I’m excited to keep working on meeting new milestones.”
Both teams conclude their regular season schedules next Friday when the REDS host les Aigles Bleues. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.
After the game the REDS will honour five seniors who will graduate from the program in the spring.
