MONTREAL – Rachel Leduc scored a dozen points and Elyssa Lajmi added 10 to lead a balanced attack as the McGill women’s volleyball team stretched its win streak to seven with a 3-0 road sweep over the toothless Piranhas from École de technologie supérieure, Sunday, at the Centre Sportif. The set scores were 25-16, 25-17 and 25-15.
While ETS dropped to 0-17, the Martlets are at the other end of the spectrum and just one win shy of the school record streak of eight consecutive regular season victories established in 2018-19. McGill has already established a school record with 16 consecutive sets won, dating back to the last one lost in the fourth set of a 3-2 win against visiting Laval on Jan. 12.
McGill registered a season-high kill efficiency (.392) with 44 kills and only six errors on 97 chances. The Martlets had the edge in kills (44-30), stuff blocks (6-1), assists (41-30) and digs (53-42).
“Our scoring was spread out today because we played the full lineup,” said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, who liberally worked all 13 players who dressed, into the game. “We expected a big start and we maintained control throughout the game. our hitting efficiency was strong and our passing was pretty good, at 1.98 (out of 3).”
Leading the way for the Piranhas was Iman Assameur with 23 points, primarily on the strength of 19 kills.
Despite not losing since mid-November, McGill is still in a three-way wrestling match for its playoff lives. With just three games left to play, the Martlets are 11-7 and sit tied with Laval (11-6), which hold a game in hand. The provincial rivals are just two points ahead of fifth-place UQAM (10-7). One of those three teams will not qualify for post-season play in the eight-team RSEQ conference.
McGill plays next at UQTR (4-13) on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m., then will close out the season with long-awaited home games against UQAM (Feb. 9) and Montreal (Feb. 16).
