Kunstmann inks pro deal in Germany

CALGARY – Graduating outside hitter Louis Kunstmann of the Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball team has signed a professional contract to play with VfB Friedrichshafen in Germany.

Kunstmann – who is from Bad Soden, Germany – wrapped up his Dinos career this past March. He was one of four Dinos to play in all 24 total matches this past season, leading the team by playing in all 94 sets on the year.

A 6-foot-9 dynamic middle/outside hitter, Kunstmann led Calgary in kills (319), kills per set (3.39) and blocks (81.0), while also finishing this past season second on the team in digs (124), service aces (19) and hitting percentage (.275).

His efforts earned him Second Team All-Canadian honours this past season, as well as being named a Canada West First Team All-Star. 

Kunstmann came to the University of Calgary back in 2020. After seeing his first collegiate season cancelled due to the Covid pandemic, he immediately shined – appearing in 26 total matches as a rookie. He tallied 1.52 kills/set and 1.05 blocks/set to make a strong first impression and earn CW All-Rookie honours while helped the Dinos to a conference bronze medal and a national fourth-place finish in 2022.

His role continued to grow, becoming a clear leader the final two seasons on the court with the Scarlet & Gold. In all, Kunstmann graduates with 1027 kills, 322.0 blocks and 368 digs in 99 career matches.

VfB Friedrichshafen is located on the southern border of Germany and was founded in 1969. They have a rich history but have been especially strong over the past 30 seasons, winning the Bundesliga 13 times and the German Cup 17 times since the 1997-98 campaign. They have also been crowned German SuperCup Champions three times in the last decade.

Kunstmann will also get the opportunity to play against his young brother, Joscha, who joined fellow Bundesliga squad SVG Lüneburg back in 2023.
