(FREDERICTON, NB) 20 matches, 20 wins.
The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team wrapped up their 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport regular season with their 20th straight win Friday night beating the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues 3-0 at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.
The regular season conference champions are the first team in Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball history to win 20 games in a season and the first to finish a season unbeaten since the 1999-2000 Memorial Sea-Hawks. That team went 18-0.
In an exciting opening set, the Aigles Bleues went ahead 5-3 before the REDS rallied to tie the score.
Moncton would re-take the lead on three more occasions, twice prompting UNB timeouts.
The REDS rallied each time and, facing match point, managed to tie the score 25-25 before scoring the final two points for a dramatic 27-25 first set win.
In the second, the REDS began to exert themselves offensively, going up 13-9 on route to a 25-21 win.
Moncton kept things interesting in the third set, trailing by no more than three points until the REDS went on a 4-0 run to close out the set and the match 25-18.
Heather Benko led the REDS with 10 kills and eight digs while Isla Olesen added eight kills.
Talia Nixon registered 24 assists, three service aces, five digs, and a pair of blocks.
Sonya Nielsen had 11 digs and Lydia Green chipped in with nine.
Emily Wezeman was named the Tim Horton’s Player of the Game.
Gabrielle LeClair led Moncton with 15 digs and eight kills while Emma Burns had eight kills and eight digs.
This is UNB’s first AUS regular season title since 2007-2008 and this season’s REDS are the first UNB team to finish the regular season undefeated since UNB went 16-0 in 1993-1994.
Up next for the REDS, the AUS semi-finals, where they’ll face the Dalhousie Tigers.
UNB will host the first game of that best-of-three series Thursday night at 7:00pm with game two the following night.
