TYPA, SOOLSMA NAMED Z-TECA MEXICAN EATERY YORK ATHLETES OF THE WEEK FOR PERIOD ENDING FEB. 1

York University Lions volleyball players Julia Typa and Colby Soolsma have been named the latest York athletes of the week, for the period ending Feb. 1. Both were key cogs in their teams’ victories this past weekend, as the Lions women’s team split two matches with the Lakehead Thunderwolves while men’s squad earned two huge wins over the Nipissing Lakers.

Typa, a fourth-year outside hitter from nearby Etobicoke, Ont., had a massive outing in her team’s four-set win over the Thunderwolves on Saturday night. Her team-high 20 points accounted for nearly a third of the team’s offensive scores, putting up 19 kills on just 45 total attacks and just three errors. Her robust .356 hitting percentage was a game high. She was also solid in a more limited offensive role in Friday’s match, putting up eight kills on 20 total attacks. Defensively, the kinesiology and health science major posted a team-leading 16 digs on Saturday, while putting up seven in the weekend opener.

Soolsma, a fourth-year outside hitter from North Vancouver, B.C., was also an offensive force in the Lions two wins over Nipissing. The reigning CCAA All-Canadian and PACWEST first team all-star put up 37 points in the two games, leading his team in that category in both matches with 18 and 19, respectively. The former VIU Mariner and current communication, social media and PR student 31 total kills over the weekend, including a team-best 18 in Saturday’s win, and had four aces in Friday’s victory.

Typa, Soolsma and the Lions volleyball teams will close out their 2025-26 regular seasons this weekend at Western with matches Friday and Sunday. Friday’s matches will be played at 1:00 and 3:00 pm, with Sunday’s games kicking off at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
